Banarasi sarees or benaresi sarees are the fine silk sarees woven by master weavers of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The traditional silk sarees are originated in the age old pilgrim city of Banaras(Now known as Varanasi). The beautiful handwork done on these silk sarees are always a visual treat. Banarasi sarees are very popular among Indian women. The sarees are widely used in auspecious ceremonies.

Normal banarasi silk saree with heavy work weighs from 600 to 1000 grams. So it can be considered as heavy. But now a days blending other fabrics to banarasi sarees are giving way to light weight banarasi sarees. Opt for light work on sarees to reduce its weight.

Check for a patch of plain silk on the pallu of the saree. All banarasi silk sarees will have the patch if they are genuine. Also look for floral motifs like kalga and bel on the zari work.

It is always recommended to do a patch test before the wash.

• Use cold water to wash your banarasi silk saree.

• Add mild detergent or shampoo to the water

• Soak the saree for 5 minutes

• After soaking gently rinse the saree

• Never brush or rub your saree, even doing gently could make the threads of the saree spring out

• Never wring your banarasi silk saree

• Dry them under shade.

• Saree covers or muslin bags are recommended to store your precious saree.
